OAKLAND — The new Township Commons park at Brooklyn Basin has become the newest hotspot for roller skating lovers.

“This place is amazing, the view and the community. Everybody enjoys each other,” said Oakland resident Annie Gullinsrud, who comes at least twice a week to roller skate on the smooth pavement that mimics the slick surface of an ice rink. Wearing pink roller-skates that seem to vibrate against her all-black attire, Gullinsrud makes circles, switches directions and performs dance moves while listening to hip-hop music on her wireless headphones.

Yes, music is key for roller skating.

“It’s hard to skate without music,” says Adriel Lively of San Francisco, who comes with her friend Ema Iwata four or five times a week after work in Oakland. Lively said, “the water, the view, lots of space, paved and flat” are the reasons she and her fellow skaters find an afternoon skating session so much better than jumping into the commuter traffic on the bridge after work. “This is one of my top three spots for roller skating. The other two are Crane Cove Park and the Chase Center in San Francisco.”

The park replaced the 9th Avenue shipping terminal built in 1930 but incorporated parts of it in the new design. The 65-acre development will include 32 acres of parks along the Oakland Estuary. Oakland-based Einwiller Kuehl Landscape Architecture designed the Township Commons park.
